Hyperbole?

Not really.

The good people at Shatterglass Studios have put out their annual video tribute to Ebertfest, the festival founded by legendary film critic Roger Ebert. Like the festival itself, which takes place every year in Champaign, IL at the Virginia Theater, Luke Boyce has directed an intimate, rich, and heartwarming short film. It features many of this year’s special guests, including Spike Lee, Patton Oswalt, and Oliver Stone discussing the importance of not only the festival, but Ebert.

Boyce and his skillful team also capture the true spirit of Ebertfest, and the wonderfully unique environment Ebert fostered. There are no studio executives buying and selling movies. No movie stars forced to do junket interviews with opportunistic members of the press. No festival attendees flippantly texting on their bright cell phones during the movie.

Ebertfest is the rare film festival that puts the films first. And similar to Ebert’s inimitable writing, the festival will live on so long as people are interested in the art and power of cinema.

The 17th annual festival will take place on April 15-19. You can buy tickets here. I hope to see you there.
